Happy New Year everyone!
We hope you had a good a time as we did. This new year has started off on a good foot and has been quite exciting!
Our lessons have started off well, and everyone is having a great time. We are rounding off the work from this year; making sure that we have all of our reading and writing and science activities squared away in these last few months of the school year. Everyone has been having a great time after our long holiday.
Of particular interest has been cooking classes, where we have been exploring and working with mikan. This yummy fruit has got everyone excited to try some more of the fruit at home. We have been using mikan in order to make a yogurt blend for the younger classes as well as oats cookies for the older children. We have certainly learned a lot in a short time.
We also had a visit from a firefighter this past week!
The firefighter came to the school to teach the children about fire safety and the importance of knowing what to do in case of a fire emergency.
The children were excited to see the firefighter in his full gear, including his firefighting suit, and helmet. He showed them his fire truck and explained how it is used to put out fires. The children were fascinated by the different tools and equipment that the firefighters use, such as the hose, and ladder.
The firefighter then taught the children about the importance of having a fire escape plan. He explained that it's important for families to have two ways out of the house in case of a fire emergency, and to practice the plan with the whole family. He also taught the children about the importance of smoke detectors, and how they can alert the family if there is a fire in the house.
The children were also taught about the importance of not playing with fire and how to prevent fires from happening.
After the lesson, the children had the opportunity to ask the firefighter questions. They were curious about what it was like to be a firefighter and how they could become one when they grow up. The Firefighter encouraged them to always strive to do their best in school and to be brave and helpful in case of an emergency.
The visit from the Firefighter was not only educational but also fun and interactive. The children learned important fire safety lessons that will stay with them for a lifetime. We are grateful to the Firefighter and the fire department for taking the time to educate our young students about fire safety.
We are all looking forward to these final three months of school and cannot wait to see what else is in store for us.
